Blyth Art Gallery, Blyth, Monday -Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. COASTS, THE SEA, AND CANADIAN ART, Gallery/Stratford, 54 Romeo St., Stratford. It has long been assumed that geography and climate are reflected in the art that is produced on Canada's east and west coasts, but until now, no one has systematically tested this assumption. Whereas the Group of Seven's attachment to the Canadian Shield has been widely studied and documented, Jack Shadbolt's affinity for the West Coast or Alex Colville's for the East remains fuzzy in most people's minds. This survey is therefore something of a first, for Chris Varley and Jeffrey Spalding, the two curators responsible for organizing the exhibition, have attempted to rigorously examine the personal motives and geographic factors that have shaped the landscape art of the Coasts. The exhibition is divided into two distinctive parts, one for the Pacific, and one for the Atlantic. Chris Varley, who organized the Pacific section, chose to look individually at 17 historical and contempor- ary artists whose work in some way reflects an experience of the coastal landscape. While throwing into doubt the often repeated assertion that British Columbia's climate and landscape exert a "pervasive" influence on the region's art, he has dealt specifically with the work of each artist rather than drawing broad and general conclusions of his own. This portion of the exhibition includes important works by Emily Carr, F.H. Varley, Jack Shadbolt, Don Jarvis, and E.J. Hughes, as well as significant contributions from lesser known artists like Tomtu Roberts, Benjamin Leeson, B.C. Binning, Maxwell Bates, Ann Kipling, Gordon Rice, Dean Ellis, and Glenn Howarth. Jeffrey Spalding, who organized the Atlantis section of the show, has taken a broader approach. Feeling that the history of art in the Maritimes has yet to be written, and that much of the information now in general circulation is incorrect, he has attempted a full assessment of the geographic, economic, historical, and social factors at work on artists in the region. His catalogue essay will be of great value to present and future students of the art in Atlantic Canada. John O'Brien, Arthur Lismer, Marsden Hartley, Christ- opher Pratt, and Eric Fischl are among the artists whose work he considers at some length. This exhibition continues until October 1, 1978.
