UP FRONT
The soil of Huron County has been a fertile growth medium for
artists over the years. Harry J. Boyle as a writer and Broadcaster
still carries the effects of his boyhood near St. Augustine. The
moods and feelings of her girlhood in Wingham transmitted to
short stories were what started Alice Munro on the way to being
one of the most highly regarded writers in the country.
But actors from Huron county have been scarcer to find. Ted
Johns. a native of the Clinton area who received his education in
Mitchell is an exception. He's been across Canada with several
shoe: s and is best known for his work with Theatre Passe
Muraille. This month he's back in his old stomping grounds to
discent the recent teachers strike with The School Show playing
at the Blyth Summer Festival. We talk with him about the show,
his career and ideas in this issue.
It was also a return of the native when iIim Young returned to
Kincardine from London several years agd. He brought with him
a Londoner who was his wife and who opened Crafty Ante an
outlet offering locally produced crafts to the Kincardine
shoppers. Valerie Young tells the story of her shop in this issue.
Ted Schinbein also is a native who returned to his old home
town when he started a business called Vanscaping in 1974 in
Mitchell. It's proven to be a good move for him and for people in
the area who like to have their vans have that special customized
look.
Our daytrip takes you on an exploration of some of the
southern Huron towns inland from Grand Bend while our dining
column originates at Grand Bend's Oakwood Inn.
