Village Squire, 1978-07, Page 38SQUIRE'S TABLE The Golden Barrel a good addition to Listowel's variety When the word came out that the managers of the Maitland Restaurant in Wingham were planning to open a new restaurant in Listowel it seemed like it could only be good news for that town. Ted and Jim Kotsanis had run an excellent small town restaurant operation in Wingham. A visit this month to the new Golden Barrel Restaurant in Listowel proves the expectation wasn't unfounded. If anything, The Golden Barrel is even better. The decor is the biggest plus for the Listowel location over the Wingham restaurant. The red velvet, deeply upholstered diningroom furniture, for instance, is among the most comfortable we've come across. It's a good job the chairs are comfortable because just reading the menu can take quite a while. There's a huge selection and surely must cater to nearly every taste. After a considerable study the family decided on spaghetti and meat balls for one youngster, spaghetti and meat sauce for another, fish and chips for a third, and Italian platter for mother and Greek Gourvet for father. A salad bar was part of the fare this Sunday evening and as is often the case, there was enough interesting potential there to make a whole meal. Will power was necessary to keep the portions small. Children's portions were ordered for the youngsters but they still came with small chef salads on the side. A basket of buns and garlic bread was also a tempting feature. There is sometimes the suspicion that such trimmings are to cut one's appetite for the main course so that a restaurant can save money but that's obviously not the case at The Golden Barrel where the entre servings were, if anything, too large. The children, particularly had trouble finishing up their "children's portions" which were large enough for many adults. The Italian platter featured 4 dishes all of which were excellent. PG. 36. VILLAGE SQUIRE/JULY 1978. The Greek Gourvet was chicken with a special sauce and rice. The only problem encountered was the chicken cooked in a sauce can't easily be picked up, yet trying to get the meat off the bones with knife and fork can be troublesome. That, however. is probably the inexperience of this Greek Gourvet eater. The food itself was very tasty. The portions. as mentioned were large and by the time dessert time came there just wasn't room so no comment can be made on the dessert menu which includes such extravagances as baked Alaska. The service was friendly and efficient. A hostess is in charge of seating in the diningroom and a large staff of waitresses keeps things moving well. In short, it was an excellent dining experience. even with three kids along. The total bill came to $14 for a family of five which was quite reasonable. Certainly The Golden Barrel cannot be compared to an expensive dining spot like The Church in Stratford but it's an excellent smalltown restaurant and Listow- el can be proud to have this addition to the town.
