The biggest news in theatre in the past
month was the surprise announcement
from the Stratford Festival that two new
productions had been cancelled because of
the hospitalization of Artistic Director
Robin Philips for an undisclosed condition.
The plays cancelled were Larry Fineberg's
Devotion and Haworth: A Portrait of the
Brontes by Beverley Cross. The simple two
paragraph announcement that Mr. Phillips
would be entering hospital for a "medical
situation that requires corrective surgery"
touched off a wave of speculation as to
what the problem was with most people
attributing it to overwork. One possibility
is that after receiving another batch of
mixed reviews from the recent Festival
opening, Mr. Phillips entered hospital to
have removed the large collection of knives
in the back which he has received over the
years since he came to Canada.
During his time as Agriculture Repre-
sentative from the Department of
Agriculture in Huron County nearly 30
years ago, Gordon Bennett became well
known to many in the area. He went on to
work his way up the ladder of the ministry
until he reached the top civil service job as
Deputy Minister. Recently his retirement
was announced from that top position.
A former resident of the region who is on
the way up the government ladder.
however, is Gordon A. Mullin a former
teacher, principal supervising principal
and recreation director at various places in
southern Ontario. He was recently named
director of education for the Department of
Indian Affairs, Ontario region. He'll
oversee administration of education affairs
to Ontario's 65,000 Indians with an
operating budget of $34 million.
Mr. Mullin started off teaching in a
one -room school house near Stratford in
1950 and later lived in Arthur, Listowel.
Meaford and Forest.
While the two former residents of the
area may have gained a lot of pull over the
years, a young Seaforth native has a lot of
push. Johnny Nielson recently won the
junior boys shot put event at the Ontario
High School track and field championships
in Kingston, setting a new meet record in
the process by throwing the 12 -pound shot
16.92 metres. In practice sessions he's had
throws of 18.4 metres. His next target is
the Canadian interscholastic meet record of
19.1 metres which is for senior students.
Mr. Neilson won't be a senior until next
year.
