Twilight racing returns to Ontario again
this summer at the Clinton Kinsmen
Raceway on an experimental basis.
The racetrack, run by the local Kinsmen
club, will stage a three-day racing meeting
on Thursday evenings in July, to
compliment their 15 -day Sunday meet, now
in its eighth season.
As well as racing each Sunday at the full
sanctioned track from June 25 to October 1,
the track will stage cards on July 13, 20 and
27 with post time 5:15 p.m. Raceway
chairman Paul Kerrigan said the three
Thursdays evening were just on an
experimental basis, "to see how they go
over."
"We felt with the Goderich track closed
down, we could use our facilities more
fully," Kerrigan said.
Last year the Kinsmen built a new
$250,000 modern grandstand and betting
area, and now boosts of one of the finest
facilities on the "B" circuit.
Most harness racing in the province is
conducted under lights at night, but
Clinton doesn't have them because
traditional meet has been on Sunday
afternoon.
NEW HOME FOR GALLERY
Gallery 96, a co-operative gallery in
Stratford nearly bit the dust last fall but it's
back in business again.
The gallery lost its original home at 96
Downie Street in October when a new
owner took over the building and for
several months it disappeared from the
scene. July saw it reappear in a new
location below the Godbout clothing store
on Ontario street. The gallery entrance is
off the service alley behind the Ontario
Street stores. which the gallery operators
have unofficially named York Lane.
For the 17 artists who organized the
gallery the new location is both good news
and bad news. On the positive side it has
2500 square feet of space by comparison
with only 400 in the other building.
meaning there is a chance to mount bigger
and better displays. Another plus is the
rent, which fits within the gallery's limited
budget.
The drawbacks are location. The old site,
near the Avon Theatre gave it high
visibility and a ready-made audience with
the theatre audience before and after
productions. The new location is harder to
see and not so close to a large audience.
The organizers however hope to solve this
by a publicity and advertising campaign to
make people aware of the new location.

The plant has been providing pianos and
organs to make music all over the country
since its founding in 1876. but the last
piano apparently will soon roll off the old
assembly line at the large building in the
south end of Clinton. The end appears on
the way because of an amalgamation
between Sherlock -Manning and Heintz -
man and Company Limited in Hanover
under the new name Heintzman Limited.
The president of the new company William
D. Heintzman who was president of
Sherlock -Manning said that it makes sense
to put the two facilities together for
economic reasons. He wouldn't say
however when the move to close the
Clinton plant would take place or even if it
would be within the next year.
The closing of the Clinton plant would
leave only three Canadian companies and
one American making pianos in Canada in
a business that once flourished. Sherlock -
Manning has made a name for itself over
the years for the quality of workmanship in
its product. Many of the pianos found in
school rooms around the country were
manufactured in the Clinton plant.
The large old factory has been
threatened several times with closure in
the past decade. The economic ups and
downs of the country have been graphically
shown in the sales of the company and in
