few tourist -oriented businesses in the
village to take advantage of it. It makes the
spruced up appearance of the village even
more impressive.
At the heart of the village, and
apparently at the heart of the pride is the
town hall, situated on the banks of the
river. It's a beautiful old building which is
presently being restored. It already is a
fine looking edifice on the outside and the
inside will soon match it with improve-
ments.
A plaque on the side of the building tells
of the founding of Paisley. It was settled in
PG. 22. VILLAGE SQUIRE/JULY 1978.
1852 when the first settlers came to the
junction of the Teeswater and Saugeen
Rivers. It was incorporated in 1874 and
shortly afterward reached a population of
1000 persons.
As in many villages and towns, water
was an important part of the reason for the
town being built. There was plenty of water
power for milling operations and the
remains of several old mills are still
present, at least one of which is being
converted for other uses.
Just across the street from the town hall
is a pleasant little parkette right in the
