plants.
Informality is definitely the feeling at the Lucknow Farmers'
Market, the newest of the farmers' markets in the area. Started only
in June it is entirely out of doors on tables set up by the vendors
themselves. The market is located in the west end of the village on
the fair grounds near the sales barn.
The market was organized by the local Agricultural Society and in
late June it had about a dozen vendors. Organizers say that many
more vendors have indicated they will be present when the garden
produce becomes plentiful.
Because the market is outdoors there are no coolers and thus no
meat or dairy produce.
One of the things that adds flavour to the smaller Lucknow market
however is the presence of Amish farmers who have settled in the
area in recent years. They bring their garden produce and home
baked goods and find a ready market on Saturday mornings.
One thing to remember though is that picturesque as they may
be, the Amish dislike having their pictures taken and market
organizers want people to leave their camera behind.
This, of course. is an excellent time of year to visit any of the
farmers' markets. With farm and garden produce starting to boom
there's plenty of selection at the markets. From now until fall each
week will bring a different variety of produce on sale. Once the
strawberry season ends it will be cherries and so on through the
year.
If you've never visited a farmers' market before, you're in for a
pleasant experience on your first time out. If you're planning a visit
however, one word of advice: get up early and go. Veteran market
people know that you should be there as soon as possible after the
market opens to get the best selection. If you're going to a market
that sells homebaked goods, you may not even have a selection at all
if you don't go early because demand usually greatly exceeds
supply.
