For whatever reason, the popularity of farmers' markets with
consumers has been growing in Canada in recent years.
Farmers' markets in Western Ontario are not exactly plentiful,
but they are thriving. We take a look at three of them this month.
We also visit St. Marys to learn how Valerie Marshall of
Marshall's of St. Marys lives with her family history around her.
Over in Goderich we visit an enthusiastic young couple who have
recently opened their own crafts shop and to hang with the
pessimists who say the economy's in a mess.
For our day trip this month it's northward into Bruce county to
visit the old and new of the county. The old is the Heritage Village of
Paisley. The new is the atomic age at the Bruce Nuclear project.
Our profile column this month is about London playwright Peter
Colley, one of the few playwrights in Canada who actually manages
to make a living at his profession.
Our dining column visits the Golden Barrel, a new establishment
in Listowel and finds it just what that town needed.
WHOOPS
One of the problems of a magazine is that deadlines are far
enough ahead of actual publication that sometimes things change,
and you get left with egg on your face. That happened to us last
month.
Readers of the Update column last month might wonder why the
Clinton Farmers' Market was not included in the review of area
farmers' markets in this issue. Any who tried to visit the Clinton
market since our last issue will know.
When our article was written talking about the new Lucknow
market and the second year of the Clinton market, we had every
indication that the Clinton market was indeed going to operate. By
the time the publication was in the mail, word had come through
that the market was cancelled.
Our sincere appologies to any who might have gone out of their
v: av to see the Clinton market because of our article.
