A Stratford native, Elizabeth Bailey
recently had her work on display as part of
an art exhibition in the Royal Bank Plaza in
Toronto. Miss Bailey, a student at the
University of Waterloo, had her work
displayed as part of the bank's Artventure
program from mid-April to mid-May. The
program is designed to help talented young
artists from across the province. Students
at various art schools and art programs
across the province participate in the
program. Exhibitions each month feature
works from a different medium: painting,
sculpture, printmaking, drawing and
experimental work.
Miss Bailey, the daughter of Mrs. Lou
Bailey of Stratford had her work chosen by
the University of Waterloo.
It's been a long way from the tiny Huron
village of St. Augustine to the corridors of
power in Canada but Harry J. Boyle has
made the journey and continues to be
rewarded for his contributions.
The well-known author, broadcaster and
former chairman of the Canadian Radio
and Telecommunications Commission was
recently made a member of the Order of
Canada. one of 20 new members of the
Order.
Mr. Boyle is now a columnist for the
Sunday Star in Toronto as well as
continuing his writing career.
It was the best of years. it was the worst
of years. That's what 1978 has been so far
for Ken Livingstone London theatre
director. The year began with headaches,
when Livingstone's own Centre Stage
theatre faced closure because expected
government funding fell through. Friends
of the theatre rallied round however and
won more money to keep the theatre going.
But then after directing a new translation
of the Henrik Ibsen play Little Eyolf he was
invited to go to Niagara -on -the -Lake to be
an assistant director at the prestigious
Shaw Festival.
For most people in southern Huron and
Perth counties Shirley Paul has been
known as . the pianist for the popular
entertainment group the Paul Brothers and
Shirley. But many others who have gone
through her classes over the years, she's
been even better known as a school
teacher. She is retiring after 36 years of
teaching in Perth County schools from a
one -room school near Kirkton to schools in
Mitchell, St. Pauls and St. Marys.
When she married Leon Paul 32 years
ago she also became part of the
entertainment business. He and brother
Gerry Paul along with Shirley have
entertained at conventions, lodge nights
and clubs not only in the local area, but in
the Toronto and Hamilton areas as well.
Shirley's teaching job hampered the
business however. because they often
arrived home late making it hard for her to
get to work the next morning. With
retirement from teaching the group hopes
to expand its territory.
