BIGGEST INTERNATIONAL EVER
PLANNED
There isn't much to see yet in the fields
just east of Wingham but come September,
the biggest event ever to be held in this
area will take place there.
Now only a billboard marks the spot
where the 1978 International Plowing
Match will be held on the Jim Armstrong
farm just off Highway 86, but from Sept.
26-30 a tented city and 250,000 people will
arrive on the site. That would be the
largest attendance ever for an International
Plowing Match, topping the attendance
two years ago in Bruce, near Walkerton.
Costs of holding the event are enormous.
For instance, the rental cost for the public
toilets to be used alone runs to $10,000.
Costs like that and the installation of hydro
services at $50,000 make it imperative that
the large crowds materialize. With the
Targe rural -urban mixed population close
by, a record attendance does seem likely.
The main enemy, of course, is weather.
The last time the International was held in
Huron in 1966 near Seaforth, the weather
turned the site into a mud bowl. The same
thing happened last year in Frontenac near
Kingston. Huron's planners are hoping the
weather co-operates this year.
FARMERS MARKETS ON THE RISE
For many people, one of the pleasures of
summer is a Saturday morning trip to a
farmers' market to buy vegetables with a
"just picked" freshness.
This year there will be more opportunit-
ies than ever to sample local produce and
crafts. An new farmers market will begin in
June in Lucknow, to compliment others
such as the one in Stratford and the
second -year market venture in Clinton.
The Lucknow market will operate on
Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. from June
10 to Oct. 28 with the exception of two
Saturdays, when the Lucknow Craft
Festival will be in operation and the
weekend of the Lucknow Fall Fair. It will
be located in the agricultural park just
south of Highway 86 irr the west end of the
village with plenty of parking available at
the Lucknow Sales Barn just next door.
It will feature fresh produce, baked
goods. preserves, home-made crafts.
flowers. plants and shrubs. all from
residents of the village and surrounding
townships.
Meanwhile the Clinton Market will have
a new location for its second year of
operation. After being in the heart of the
town last year. the market will be moved to
a more spacious spot this year at the fair
grounds. There visitors will have little
problem finding free parking and sellers
will have the nearby grandstand to set up
under in case of bad weather.

NEW RESTAURANT IN LISTOWEL
Listowel now has a new restaurant to add
to the variety of local food outlets.
Actually the restaurant is a five-year-old
idea of Jim Kotsanis. co-owner of the
restaurant along with his brother Ted. The
two also own the Maitland Restaurant, a
popular family -style restaurant in Wing -
ham.
Mr. Kotsanis wanted to open the
restaurant in Listowel five years ago but
couldn't find a suitable location. He finally
got a building and went ahead with the
plans with designer Bill Mitsis and
contractor Peter Karahalios. Mr. Kotsanis
received his education in the restaurant
business at Fanshawe college in London
and worked in restaurants in London,
Grand Bend and Exeter, a lot of experience
for a man who's only 28.
