Village Squire, 1978-06, Page 15neighbouring counties during the winter with a number of shows
geared to various age groups. The program was successful both
critically and with the students and when an extension of the
grant was obtained to run in the summer months a summer
season using the core of the Theatre Go Round troupe became
possible. Miss Mahoney feels the 1978 summer season is a sort
of pilot season for Victoria Playhouse and expects to break even
or even make money this summer.
To do that she's steering away from the heavy dramas of last
summer. The season will open July 1 with Godspell, the
rock -musical version of the Gospel According to St. Matthew.
New Friends, old friends, a children's play written by Duncan
McGregor will be the second play from July 6-13.
We Must Kill Tony will be the production telling of two
brothers who scheme to take care of the cousin who has inherited
their estate. It plays from July 11 to 15. The Four Poster, one of
the most enduring modern plays will play from July 18-22. It
deals with 35 years of a couple's marriage.
The final production of The Wizard of Oz is a touring
production from Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton.
Part of the charm of going to theatre in Petrolia is, of course,
Victoria Playhouse itself. It's a huge building, built during the oil
boom in the 1800's in Lambton county, the first commercial oil
discovery in North America. It was a testament to the times in
the county, an ornate old building complete with theatre boxes
next, to the stage. It was a cultural centre for the region,
attracting the best in entertainment. Like many such buildings, it
languished in neglect for many years in the mid twentieth
century before the interested citizens came to the rescue. Since'
then several hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent
modernizing the building while at the same time restoring the
historic beauty.
