Village Squire, 1978-05, Page 26been combined for this shop giving plenty
of room for displays and for browsing.
Another fascinating spot on main street
is Tschanz General Store which really
features three different small shops. On
the right side is meats and cheese with a
mouth-watering variety of meats and
cheeses. On the left is the Village Bakery
which has an array of baked foods that
almost puts pounds on just on sight. Also
in this shop are a selection of crafts,
particularly doll houses and doll house
furniture which are very interesting.
Upstairs from these two shops is The
Upstairs Ice Cream Parlour and Coffee
Shop which has an outdoor patio for use in
the warmer months.
Nearby is the Snitzelbank with Canadian
crafts and gifts and as a shop within a
shop, there is Wickerwork Boutique with a
wide variety of wicker furniture and
deorative pieces.
Also along the main street are Bowman's
Weaving and Variety, and Century House
with antiques and local crafts. A little
farther along is Laughing Horse Gallery
featuring photography.
And in the centre of the business district
is The Stone Crock restaurant and Gift
Shop.
Up the highway headed north toward
Elmira is a monument to Elias Weber
Bingeman Snider, one of the Sniders who
owned the mill we spoke of earlier. Mr.
Snider was one of th( •Moneers of hydro
electric power in Ont:. tip). He hooked up a
dynamo to this dam to power his mill and
then sold electricity .rom it to local
homeowners. In 1902 speaking to the
Waterloo Board of Trade he predicted that
the majority of people in the room would
see the day when their streets and home
would be lighted with electrical lights.
In 1903 he was elected chairman of the
Hydro Inquiry Commission that as looking
into the possibility of harnessing the power
of Niagara Falls to generate electricity for
the region. It was 1917 before that power
came to his own village.
Unlike many of the other towns and
villages which have seen the coming of
chique little shops in recent years, St.
Jacobs has seen the whole town
transformed. Being so close to Elmira and
Kitchener -Waterloo its ordinary merchants
found the competition tough. Thus, unlike
say Elora where the new shops found their
way to an unused section down along the
river, in St. Jacobs the new shops are right
on the main street. That may or may not be
to the liking of local people but for the
visitor, it does mean an interesting place to
visit and shop in.
