Village Squire, 1978-05, Page 21"The Hollox.." Later the village adopted its present name. after
Benjamin Miller. owner of one of the flour mills.
The store's interior also reflects its historical relevance.
Artifacts such as pulleys from the original mill are incorporated
into the store's decor. Even the wallpaper is a product of the silk
screening effect from the early flour sacs.
Since the store is located within the Benmiller complex, the
bulk of its customers are from the Inn. "About 40 per cent of the
guests at Benmiller in the summer are American tourists," said
Carol.'
However, Carol emphatically pointed out that local people are
certainly more than welcome to visit the shop. Being manager of
a craft -oriented boutique is not a new experience for Carol. In
1969, she and her husband Beg. opened a similiar store in
Lucknow.
"Both my husband and 1 are interested in the promotion of
hand-crafted work," explained Carol, adding they were the
originators of the Lucknow summer craft festival which started in
1970.
Unfortunately. because of its location and dependance on the
tourist trade. Carol closed the Lucknow store in December 1976.
"It ‘..as a nice experience...but we just realized our location was
not right for the type of thing. we wanted to do," said Carol.
Another reason for the closing was the clientele forced her to
sell regular gift items, and her interests lay in crafts.
'.as not interested in running a regular gift shop...that was
not what I had in mind," said Carol. adding that The Hollow
suits her perfectly.
Carol's future plans for the shop include inviting local artisans
this summer to demonstrate their craft. Other plans. involve a
possible expansion of the shop. Carol is also this summer touring
parts of Ontario. looking for additional crafts to display.
Starting the Victoria Day v.eekend, the store will be open
throughout the reek from 11 am to 8 pm. Present store hours are
I am to 5 pm from Monday to Sunday.
