Village Squire, 1978-05, Page 13Also in Goderich is another museum of a different sort. The
Huron County Historic Gaol is located on a hill overlooking the
Maitland valley just at the north end of town just west of
Highway 21.
The gaol is a chilling reminder of how we once treated our
prisoners. The cold bleak stone walls feel chilly even in the heat
of summer. The small exercise yards and the high walls give one
the impression he would have had as a prisoner.
A short hallway links the gaol with the gaol governor's house
which has been restored to the period. It's quite a contrast, the
simple luxury of the house to the bleakness of the gaol.
The fate of the Minnie Thompson Memorial Museum on
Romeo Street in Stratford is still up in the air following the death
of its guiding light David Thompson. The museum may be taken
over by the Perth Historical Board. If the museum is open to the
public this summer it's an impressive place to visit. It's
impressive not because of the buildings that house the museum.
but because of the fantastic collection Mr. Thompson has
assembled. There's about everything you could imagine here.
old cars. tractors. steam engines, clocks and on and on. It's been
a tremendous service to the community for Mr. Thompson to
have saved the relics of a former time.
East of Stratford on Highway 7-8 near 'Shakespeare is the
Fryfogel Inn. one of the inns built along the Huron road into the
Huron Tract in order to serve the settlers moving into the area. It
v.as built in 1844 or 1845 and replaced an earlier log building.
Today it's been restored to resemble an inn of the time and
better things arc on the way. Soon you'll be able to dine there
just as the travellers of that early era would have.
Tv.o smaller municipal museums are located in Perth at St.
Marys and in Huron at Wingham. The St. Marys District
Museum is located in historic Tracey House in Cadzow Park in
the town. It has 13 rooms which house such things as a collection
of birds that would be found in the area in 1865. a display of old
