The shop owners preview
the fashions for
spring and summer
BY FRANCES BARRICK
As those warmer spring days approach. the bulky winter
clothing will be shed and replaced by this year's spring fashions
for men and women.
For women, the look this spring will be very soft, feminine,
flouncy, almost peasantry said Barbara Hammond, owner of
Gourlay's, a women's fashion store in Stratford.
"Dresses and skirts are much more in than evei before," said
Miss Hammond. adding that dresses will be big, and flowing
with Tots of flounces (ruffles).
Dress sleeves will also be big and flowing with elasticized
cuffs. Emphasis on the figure will be at the waist with belts,
elasticized waists and tie drawstrings. Dress and skirt lengths
will be anything from the knee down.
Dress patterns will be mainly tiny flowery prints. Cotton
dresses will show a comeback, as part of a general trend back to
natural fabrics like cotton.
According to Joy Lavis, owner of the The Wedge in Clinton.
the velour material (velvet-like terrycloth) will be current
appearing in everything from dresses to beach wear.
Modish spring colours for dresses and skirts will be white.
cream, pastels and ice cream shades like pale pink and yellow.
Three basic skirt styles will emerge this spring.
