GEORGE HAWKEN. Hawken's world is
concentrated, angular, suffused with
black. Shadow figures come and go.
Interiors are ,suspended and tense, eyes
stare blindly and knowingly. The self is
questioned and the anxiety portrayed
results from a confusion of responses, a
blockage of replies. March 17 to April 9.
The Gallery/Stratford.
LINE AND MATISSE. The second of three
didactic shows in the series Themes in
Digest. Henri Matisse's work will be
represented by a drawing and lithograph
from the collection of the Art Gallery of
Ontario. They will be accompanied by an
annotated slide presentation of other
drawings and paintings by Matisse, as well
as examples of the art of his peers. March

PAINTERS ELEVEN. The Robert Mc-
Laughlin Gallery of Oshawa has kindly
agreed to lend the Gallery/Stratford
paintings from its collection produced by
members of one of English Canada's
pioneer groups of abstract painters.
Painters Eleven, whose membership
included Jack Bush, William Ronald, and
Jock MacDonald, laid the ground work that
led to Toronto's emergence as an
important Canadian art centre during the
past 15 years. March 29 to April 9, The
Gallery/Stratford.
DESIGN: PAST AND PRESENT. An
exhibition of everyday objects making
comparisons between late nineteenth
century and contemporary design. Organ-
ized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
