Village Squire, 1978-04, Page 29that has been very aggressive in pricing policies: Snell's
Groceries in Blyth.
Of the six stores. the Zehrs chain has probably been making
the biggest name for itself in these parts in the past few years.
It's had an aggressive expansion policy and, for instance, when it
moved into Kincardine, it undercut the opposition so badly that
soon there was only one other supermarket left in the bustling
town.
Of the six stores we looked at, that Zehrs in Kincardine and
the A&P in Goderich were the two most impressive from terms of
physical layout. Both, of course, are relatively new stores.
They're stocked to the limit with everything you could dream of,
particularly with fresh fruits and vegetables which beat the
smaller independent merchants all hollow. There's no doubt
about it that if you're after a wide selection, the big stores are the
place to go. But others will. like the relaxed atmosphere and
friendly service of the small independent stores. So it's a case of
different strokes for different folks in this department.
But what about the prices? Well we found the small
independent stores held their own pretty well against the giants.
In areas that could be compared we found Zehrs was cheapest in
five items, A&P and Snell's Groceries were tied for second with
four first place votes while Loblaws led in two areas and the Red
Front. one. Surprisingly in the items surveyed. Dominion failed
to top the lot in any area. In the comparison with Loblaws,
however it came out on top in one area. The survey of the two
Stratford stores was conducted on a Saturday afternoon.
Dominion had its shelves still well stocked. Many shelves at
Loblaws were empty making an accurate survey very hard to
take.
Because of the difficulties of a fair comparison, we didn't try to
make too much out of the results. You can draw your own
conclusions. After all. who'd want to kill the fun of the great food
price debate.
