Village Squire, 1978-04, Page 16With regards to consumer jewelry buying, David said for the most part people are purchasing more jewelery. "People are better off. more affluent today," he said, "and jewelery has definite value and beauty and it is a general commodity most people like to have." What determines the value of a gemstone, according to David. depends on three related factors; its rarity. beauty and durability. For instance, an amethyst is a beautiful gem. but is not as rare as an emerald or diamond, he explained. But an emerald is a valuable and an expensive gem because it is rare. durable and possesses beauty. "Then there are certain minerals found that are too fragile to be used as a gemstone." said David. "If the gene ►.ill not stand up under normal wear then it isn't much good as a gemstone." A gem that is very valuable is an alexandrite. as it is so rare few people have seen one. "Because it is so rare. and there :sn't as big a demand for it. it is almost a collector's item," he said. However, according to David, the diamond still remains the most popular and universally known gemstone. Birthstone, come second in the list of most sought after gems. Anstett Jewelers' professionalism is represented in it, membership to three professional associations, the most prestigious of which is the American Gemmological Society. To become a member of this non-profit organization, the store must meet three requirements. First, a store member must have at tN minimum the diamond course sponsored by the Gemmological Institute of Amefica, in addition to the American Gemmological Society's course on management and selling. Thirdly, the firm itself must be accepted by the association on the basis of its business practices. The purpose of the American Gemmological Society is to protect the consumer by establishing work ethics and standards for gemmologists to follow.
