Village Squire, 1978-04, Page 11November 1976 brought a complete new look for the magazine.
photograph of a colourful steam engine was used to prove the
capability of the magazine and our printer Doug Whitmore of
Blyth Printing to reproduce full colour. The complicated process
is,too expensive for a magazine of this size to use regularly, even
though it would be the dream of the editor to do so.
Things went along without too much change for the next year
until November of 1976 when the magazine was completely
redesigned in the format now used. That first issue featured a
cover story on the work to renovate the old Exeter Town Hall and
some of the behind the scenes squabbling that dragged th'e
project out over several years. Today the squabbling occasionally
still goes on but the building gives a bright new face to the
Exeter Main street.
The new format gave stronger play 'to back of the book features
including regular columns on s'.tbjects such as theatre, the press,
business, books, radio and television.
There was also a new column that. from reaction of readers,
seems to have been one of the most popular additions to the
book. The column is excerpts from the diary of a police chief of a
mysterious area town by the name of Hamhocks. The chief
constantly battles crime and town council and his leacherous
next door neighbour.
The magazine at the same time took on a nevj/ appearance with
a larger addition. Since that time most of the issues have been at
least 40 and often 48 pages. Compared to the initial 24 pages and
the magazine has shown a good deal of growth. There has also
been a good deal of growth in the area covered. Initially the
magazine went to a small number of people in Goderich, Clinton,
Wingham, Lucknow and Blyth. Today the coverage area
stretches from Kincardine and Walkerton in the north to London
in the south, from Stratford and St. Marys in the east to Lake
Huron. In addition copies of the magazine are mailed to
subscribers all around the globe.
