Village Squire, 1978-04, Page 8The front cover of that first issue featured a photo from The
Farm Show that showed Janet Amos and Miles Potter in a scene
from the hit show. If the magazine went on to success, Miss
Amos went on to greater success in 1978 as the star of the hit
television show A Gift To Last. She will also be at the Shaw
Festival this summer. Potter too has gone on to become one of
the busiest stage and television performers.
They and other Passe Murialle performers were to appear
again several times in the pages of the magazine as years went
by and the Toronto theatre group made Western Ontario its
second home touring again and again with shows such as Them
Donnellys; 1837, The Farmers' Revolt; The West Show;
Horsburgh; 18 Wheels; He Won't Come In From the Barn and
Shakespeare for Fun and Profit.
Not all these featured in the first issue went on to such
success. The story about the plans for the future at the Clinton
Centre, for instance turned out to have not such a happy ending

plans were cut back. -
The second issue in May featured the work of a small group of
Huron county artists working on a Local Initiatives Program
grant to provide art for Huron county hospitals. Among the
group were Jim Marlatt and Ernie Niblock, both later to have
stories of their own told through Village Squire.
The third issue provides interest in retrospect. One of the
stories featured was on James Murphy and his Huron Country
Playhouse, then going into its second season. The Playhouse was
still operating out of the tent then. but later was to get a more
permanent home when a new barn -style theatre was built.
Veterans, however, recall the days when the wind and rain
whipped the tent, sending light standards into a frenzy and
blocking out all sound from the actors on stage.
While the Playhouse went on to bigger and better things, the
other local arts centre featured that month didn't fare so well.
Wingham artist Guenther Heim had taken a brave step in
building an art gallery on his property north of the town which
