Village Squire, 1978-02, Page 21to Toronto to get special orders bringing an expense they could
in no way recover from the sale of the item.
One of the things that has made the shop successful, Leigh
says, is that they carefully defined what they wanted to do before
starting out. They will not carry any item that a chain store can
sell cheaper, she says. If a customer wants some little thing that
she can get at another store, they'll send her there.
They set out, Leigh says. to establish their presence as firmly
as possible. They didn't want the image of one of those little
shops that opens, then quietly disappears.
Although the couple is comparatively new to the downtown
business community, they apparently have won ready
acceptance from the other merchants in the district. Leigh is one
of nine merchants on the City Centre Committee, a committee
funded by a levy on the taxes of downtown businesses to help
promote the downtown area. The committee is helping to
beautify the downtown area with such things as the planters on
the streets, landscaping walkways and beautifying parking
areas. They are trying to make parking lots more appealing and
make them easier to get to by giving better signs, and just
generally improving the whole core area of the city. Leigh says
she finds the work very stimulating.
She's still of course got her art background, even though it
now takes a back seat to her business interest. Recently she gave
a show at the Stratford Public Library and last summer had a
show at Elora. Right now. however, she's too busy for much
drawing except for advertising for the shop.
So for both Leigh Dennison with her shop, her community
work and her art and Colleen Stephenson with her theatre and
business careers. there doesn't seem to be much opportunity for
boredom. ❑
