of our
winter
wonde rland
BY
THELMA COLEMAN
When winter winds begin to blow
They bring our Lady of the Snow
Her Royal robes; and by decree
She rules our land from sea to sea.
The sapphire stars become her crown
As clear and bright they sparkle down;
A shawl of black lace filigree
Is made by every darkened tree.
Her dress is white and soft and fine
Embroidered with a row of pine;
And when the night is clear and bright
Her gown will flash with diamonds bright.
Sometimes in whimsy when she sings
The frost makes countless elfin wings
Along each branch: They are the charms
She wears in gayness on her arms.
But suddenly her mood can change,
From Scotia to the mountain range
Her wintry cloak she swirls around,
Snow fleeced and thick it makes the sound
Of blizzards roaring, biting cold,
Piling deep drifts with every fold;
Repentent then, she is serene
White -gloved she calms the stormy scene.
An artist now. she leaves as proof
Thick scallops edging every roof;
Snow mounds are blossoms on each bush
And quickly in the storms first hush
She traces patterns on each tree,
A fairy world for all to see.
She rules this frozen world alone,
The ice -capped shores her Royal throne;
And in her Court, the wind is there
Flute music playing everywhere.
She's chosen by the Great Command -
Queen of our Winter Wonderland.
