Tidbits of interesting information
from around Western Ontario
The Huron County Pioneer Museum in
Goderich had another successful summer
season, curator Raymond Scotchmer
reported recently.
18,000 persons poured through the
turnstiles at the museum. Souvenir sales
were about $3000, up slightly over last
year.
The museum also received a new exhibit
recently, a nine -foot china cabinet which
was in the hotel at St. Joseph in the early
part of the century. It was part of the estate
of the late Narcisse Cantin, St. Joseph.
WESTERLUND DRAWING TO COME TO
GALLERY/STRATFORD
It may take three years before it is on
display but a pastel drawing by Mia
Westerlund of Toronto and New York will
one day find a new home in The
Gallery/Stratford. At present the drawing
is part of a touring show The Queen's
Silver Jubilee Art Collection which the
Queen viewed when she was in Ottawa.
The show contains only 26 pieces of art and,
the Westerlund work. "Untitled 1977" is
the show because of efforts by Gallery
director Robert Swain. It was one of three
pieces nominated by The Gallery which
along with other nominations were
considered for the show.
"She's a supberb drawer", says Mr.
Swain of Ms. Westlund. "She's one of the
outstanding artists in the country. We
don't have one of her works in our
collection yet." When the tour of the
collection ends, however, that will be
remedied.

A two month debate came to an end in
late November when the Exeter council
signed an agreement with Hawleaf
Developments Limited, of Toronto. Local
merchants were worried about the effect
the development would have on the
downtown business area. not so much from
the first phase but from the second one,
according to one shopowner. So far only a
supermarket and a hank have agreed to
locate in the new centre but a second phase
at a later date would contain a fuller range
of retail outlets providing more competition
with downtown businessmen. Initially only
local food outlets will face stiff competition.
