Village Squire, 1978-01, Page 29who says she is "Canada's token widow".
Mrs. Wylie is the widow of Bill Wylie who
was manager of the Stratford Festival
Theatre when he died suddenly in the
prime of his life at age 45. She was left with
four children to raise alone. After she had
recovered a little from the shock she turned
to freelance writing and one of the articles
accepted was one on what it was like to be a
widow that was published in Maclean's
magazine three years ago. Response was
enormous. Later she did another article
along the same lines for Canadian
magazine with similar results.
This topic was dealt with again in series
of brochures for the Canadian Life
Insurance Association. Now Mrs. Wylie is
author of a book for McClelland and
Steward called Beginnings, A Book for
Widows. For the 900.000 widows in
Canada, Mrs. Wylie says the book
represents recognition, a chance to say "At
last there's somebody who understands
me." The pain is like the tears. she says:
"They may subside, but they never go
away."
