Don Martin has followed in his father Glen's footsteps in the
cheese business and now wouldn't want to do anything else.
In 1940 electricity was provided for the first time to the plant
and mechanical refrigeration was installed. In 1947 the factory
worked year-round for the first time. It was a time when
Canadian cheddar cheese was becoming famous around the
world. Huge amounts of cheddar were exported to the United
Kingdom in the next couple of decades providing Canada with a
healthy trade surplus.
In 1955 at the 70th anniversary of the company F. Bates,
Ontario Dairy Commissioner told those attending the celebration
that in the previous year Canada had exported 8 million pounds
of cheddar to the United Kingdom.
The Pine River company was growing. In 1958 it amalgamated
with the Huron Cheese and Butter Factory also in Huron
township and located a few miles to the North east. The same
year Glen Martin was appointed cheese maker.
In 1960 revenue from the factory had reached $516,730.36. By
1976 the year end report showed a total of $1.5 million in sales on
1.229,000 pounds of cheese and 32,000 pounds of whey cream.
That sale of cream is because, although it was called the
cheese and butter co-operative, Pine River no longer makes
butter. It had always been a sideline and when in 1973 the plant
was being modernized. and the installation of new cheesemaking
equipment required more room, the management decided to
