THE GALLERY/STRATFORD, STRAT-
FORD:
Traditions of Christmas - the Gallery
invited 'Perth County schools to make
displays that would illustrate how
Christmas is celebrated in different
countries and at different times. The
exhibition includes Christmas trees,
decorations, and paintings. Each display is
accompanied by a short summary,
researched and written by participating
students. The exhibition continues until
December 4.
Lemoine Fitzgerald: The 45 drawings
and watercolours by Lemoine FitzGerald
come from the Douglas Duncan bequest
made to the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 1970.
Although they represent only a small
fraction of that Gallery's collection of
FitzGerald's work, they provide an
intimate and important record of that
artist's activities as a draughtsman.
FitzGerald, who was born in Winnipeg in
1890, is known only by reputation to most
Canadians, for, despite his brief member-
ship in the Group of Seven in 1932, he lived
quietly and worked in comparative
isolation. His only important ally in
Winnipeg was Bertram Brooker, with
whom he shared formal and spiritual
affinities.
The works in this exhibition clearly
reveal the private and rather obsessive
nature of FitzGerald's art. Yet in his
sincere and undramatic search for the
essential character of his subjects, he
created artworks of astonishing clarity and
beauty. In notes that were not published
until after his death it Winnipeg in 1956
FitzGerald wrote: It is necessary to get
inside the object and push it out rather
than merely building it up from the outer
aspect...This requires endless search and
contemplation; and appreciation for the
endlessness of the living force which seem
to pervade and flow through all natural
forms, even though these seem on the
surface to be so ephemeral.
Just how frequently and fully FitzGerald
achieved this goal can be seen in the
drawings and watercolours in this
exhibition, which continues until January
10: 1978.
