Village Squire, 1977-11, Page 35e s e s The evolution of the show, he has said, was part of his coming to realize the potential of the region, a grasping of the fact that if you didn't cut the district into sections by building walls between towns, you had an environment as interesting and challenging as any in the country. He built up a knowledge of interesting people throughout his coverage area who provided contact with what was going on in many areas of life. His committment grew to helping people to understand what an interesting place they lived in if they'd widen the scope of their thinking. It was as if he was in training for his future job. "When we talked to Jim", says George Clark, co-producer of the show, "he sounded just the way we wanted when we first came up with the idea of the show." Regionalism, Clark says. is an important part of the Morning Break format. A map on the wall near his desk bears red and green circles showing all the communities crews from the show have visited in the first season and so far this year. Last year it visited 86 other centres. The circles range from near Windsor in the south to Clinton and Goderich and this year even further north, following the interest generated for the show by Jim Swan and in the area by his knowledge of it. The show tries to visit five different communities a week. There's a "Your Town" series which features places where the news crews of the station wouldn't normally go. In addition, if it comes to a choice between a good story from one of the other centres in the region, and one from London, Clark says. the regional story will win out.
