a glittering
showcase
The glitter, glamor, and excitement of
the best of the performing arts can be
found at one of North America's most
sophisticated showcases --the National Arts
Centre.
Located in Canada's capital city, Ottawa,
the National Arts Centre hosts some of the
best-known artists in the world, including
Gordon Lightfoot, Julian Bream, Gino
Vannelli, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and
the Toronto Symphony.
As a national showcase, the NAC reflects
the character of Canada and its people, and
places special emphasis on performances
given by visiting Canadian artists.
Bounded by Confederation Square and
the historic Rideau Canal, the seven-year-
old Arts Centre boasts four performance
halls, as well as a restaurant, cafe, bars,
and book and record shops.
The three main halls, the Opera, Theatre
and Studio, and the small, more intimate,
Salon, were constructed "in the interests
of artistic excellence". The warm, pleasing.
decor, the size of the halls and the variety
of seating arrangements provide an
intimate atmosphere between performer
and audience. The most advanced sound
and lighting systems guarantee a high
degree of technical quality.
For dining out, the National Arts Centre
has a restaurant renowned for its food,
service and reasonable prices.

During the summer the cafe at the
Centre is a 'hot spot'. Whether sitting on
the terrace overlooking the softly lit Rideau
Canal or dancing to the music of the band,
it's a great way to meet people and enjoy
the atmosphere of the capital city.
Works of art in the National Arts Centre
include interesting and original pieces by
Canadian and foreign artists. For example,
the magnificent stage curtain in the Opera
was designed by Micheline Beauchemin
and woven in Japan. The effect is of a
glittering waterfall in red shades, with
metallic highlights and rippling fishnet
facings.
The largest work of sculpture is the pair
of cast aluminum doors leading to the
Salon and created by Jordi Bonet. They are
6.6 metres high (22 feet) and weigh 1,816
kilograms (two tons) each, but can be
moved with the touch of a finger.
Other works include: Julien Hebert's
glimmering fountain in the shape of a tree,
a gaily colored abstract mural by William
Ronald and the bronze, Three Graces, by
the late Ossip Zadkine of Paris.
The National Arts Centre has become a
meeting place for national and internation-
al artists as well as one of the most exciting
entertainment places in Canada.
