Cafe Fiore adds interesting touch
to Elora shopping trip
A restaurant that serves food cafeteria
style hardly seems to rate a word like
"classy" but there's something classy
about Cafe Fiore in Elora just the same.
If it's elegance you look for, in terms of
red linen table cloths and candelabra and
expensive china and cutlery, you won't find
it here. It's a real cafe, bright and airy and
relaxed, and we found it a fun place.
The Cafe Fiore has a cafe on the ground
floor and a bistro in the basement and tries
to imitate the French origin of each down to
French names for all the food. There are
definite Canadian touches though, particu-
larly the prominence of pine wood with
pine tables and walls and handsome
naturally finished chairs. Dishes are
hand -thrown pottery, including coffee
mugs which have the Cafe's name
imprinted on them.
Prominently displayed at the counter
and on the menu (a large blackboard above
the cafeteria counter) is the message: "If
you're in a hurry, forget it." We weren't so
didn't, but didn't find service too long
either.
Many of the dishes are displayed in a
glass -fronted cabinet which you can look at
while you wait to be served. Each portion
of the meal is charged separately for you

The menu offered a wide variety but we

roll. The soup ranked among the best

piping hot in a pottery bowl. The broth was
tastey, but not too strong as we've found in
some other soups. The cheese formed a
flavourful crust on top. It was a good.
warming way to start the meal. particularly
in chilly fall days.
The cabbage roll was large with a spicey
taste that was different than other cabbage
rolls we've tasted, but very good. It can be
more filling than you expect so don't plan
to make it a small part of a big meal. We
went back to the counter to get dessert

so fresh it must have been baked the same
day. For the man dessert was an apple tart.
The pastry of the tart was a delight, brown

and light but the filling. alas. was what is
euphemistically called apple, the kind you
get in those canned pie fillings. It just
wasn't up to the standard of the rest of the
food.
It was a light meal. but still quite filling.
If your appetite is larger. the menu offers
many other choices including such
possibilities as cornish hen. at the
remarkable price of $3.50 or even Beef
Wellington, Rack of Lamb or Duck
L'Orange but these final three must be
ordered in advance with reservations. A
good wine list is also available.
Our one complaint was a lack of cutlery,
a small oversight by someone from the
kitchen.
The staff in the open kitchen is young
and pleasant. Their record is obviously well
earned since they boast a gold seal of
approval from Where to Eat in Canada. the
authoritative food guide in Canada. From
what we could see they deserve it. It's a
different and pleasant dining experience. a
place that offers good. and different food,
in a casual relaxed atmosphere. It's also
inexpensive at only S8 for two.
