Village Squire, 1977-11, Page 21Tom tu. ned anc started off again. Jack ran ahead of Tom over a small tree -covered hill and shouted, "Look!". When Tom reached the top of the hill, he saw a large body of dirty water which was known as Mud Lake. Mud Lake was its name because old timers in Bradleys' neighborhood told stories about it being a bottomless lake. Tom remembered a story, told to him when he was a small boy, about two large draft horses being frightened in the swamp when they were pulling logs. The horses. in fright, ran directly into the lake and were unable to swim because of the mud which more or less acted as quicksand. The two helpless beasts were never seen again. The boys kept well away from the lake and decided to rest again. By this time it was almost dark. Tom heard his brother start to cry and at this moment he knew they were lost. When a thin layer of snow had covered -their tracks, leading into the swamp. Tom knev3 that they were in trouble. Instead of venturing into the darkness they decided to find a sheltered spot. They found a suitable leaf -covered patch, situated under some thick pines and Tom suggested they gather some wood for a fire. When the boys had gathered enough fire wood, which was rather damp they huddled around and prepared to light it. Jack pulled a lighter out of his back pocket and carefully lit some small leaves. When the fire was smouldering, he placed some small twigs on it and gradually brought the fire to a warming flame. While the two were sitting there they pondered how they would get out of the dismal swamp. Their parents were gone for the week and with no one at home to miss them, they might never be rescued. Jack tried yelling for help but he soon quieted when all he got for an answer was his hollow echo. Jack pulled a damp. partially -smoked cigar out of his pocket and asked Tom if he wanted a smoke. Jack was at the age when he would do anything for a kick and it just happened to be his 'cigar week. When Tom was handed the cigar he asked Jack how POTTED PLANTS TO BEAUTIFY YOUR HOME OR AS A SPECIAL GIFT •Poinsettias *Cyclamens •A,,ileas • Mum, •lerusalem cherry trees • l3egonias *Gloxinias •Dried & silk flower arrangements • Dish gardens ARRANGEMENTS WEDDINGS NEW BORNS FUNERALS ' G3faia '91awe44 LISTOWEL 291-3032 Smith's Market Square The centre for family shopping in Listowel, with over 30,000 feet of selling space for your convenience and selection.
