Village Squire, 1977-11, Page 15Mona's work now mixes fantasy with nature, such as this picture
of a cloak of roots, leaves and flowers.
art gallery she has had her work earlier this year at the Glen
Gallery in London. She was on the telephone this day talking to a
'school that wanted her to display her work. She wants to have a
continuing series of shows so that people will be familiar with her
v. ork.
She's finding it tough, though, breaking into the London
market. There are so many good artists in London, she says,
thanks in good part to the Beal courses. Competition is fierce and
to a certain extent success depends on luck in hitting the right
person at the right time.
If London is tough, Toronto is even worse. Galleries there
don't even want to touch the work of an artist who hasn't shown
widely elsewhere. she says.
As difficult as things may be, one gets the impression that
Mona Mulhern will overcome obstacles. Along with her
childhood imagination which she recently rediscovered, she also
seems to have rediscovered that childhood excitment and
enthusiasm that most of us leave behind. It nearly radiates from
her as she talks about art and creativity. It seems to make for an
unbeatable combination. ❑
