Point Pelee
is a bird watcher's
paradise
BY TONY SLOAN
Point Pelee, Ontario protrudes like a
curved dagger of sand and forest thrusting
southwards into Lake Erie. It's the most
southerly point of mainland Canada, it's a
national park and it's probably known to
every serious birder from Boston to
Saskatoon.
To find Pelee, look for Leamington, the
tomato capital of Ontario and the Park is
six miles (9.6 kilometres) beyond on
Highway 77 which runs south of Highway
401.
The Point is the main migratory landfall
and departure on the Canadian shore of
Lake Erie tor both birds and insects coming
northward in spring or south in the fall.
Pelee's 14 miles (22.4 kilometres) of
beaches is the next most popular attraction
but there's a great deal more to interest a
curious visitor than birds, sand and sun.
A suggested starting point is the large
interpretive centre building with perman-
ent fauna and flora exhibits including a
beautiful butterfly collection and a theatre
for specially selected nature films.
Informative Parks Canada nature interpre-
ters are on hand to answer specific
questions and to recommend and distribute
literature.
Here you also obtain the list of scheduled
activities on tap, lectures, tours, film
showings, and becoming acquainted with
the Park's nature interpretive program.
My arrival coincided with a Junior
Naturalist outing scheduled for the
following morning and beginning with a
camp breakfast at 8 a.m.
A bird hike was the first order of march
so about two dozen boys and girls ranging
from six to 12 years and led by park
naturalist, Loney Dickson set out to
observe and identify the Point Pelee late
