Village Squire, 1977-10, Page 31PEOPLE It's not often a Canadian city can number a knighted person among its former residents but Stratford recently marked such an occasion for posterity with the unveiling of a plaque in memory of the late Sir John Cunningham McLennan. The plaque is on the site of the former McLennan home at 203 William Street, near the river in Stratford. Sir John at one time taught school at nearby Clachan School in North Easthope township before entering University of Toronto. He later became known for his work researching a submarine detection service during World War I. his success in liquefying helium gas in 1923, his work with radium in the treatment of cancer and his discovery of the green line in the spectrum of the aurora borealis. He was knighted in 1935. For a long time banking has kept the "man" in manager but Betty Bradshaw recently broke that barrier when she was named manager of the Fordwich branch of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. But "it's not women's lib." she says as the reason for her promotion but good old farm background. Mrs. Bradshaw was working as an accountant at the nearby Wroxeter branch of the bank when head office in Toronto offered the job to her. Her first reaction was "no way", but her family of husband Harvey and two daughters Vicki and Karen encouraged her and after two months of thought. she decided to take the job. Far from being a women's libber. Mrs. Bradshaw said that "My family comes first, then my job." She's been working since she was 15 and says "Every advancement has been offered to me, I never asked for them. They say you need an education; it's not so." If you're worried about the soaring cost of fuel Charles Smith of Robert Bell Industries in Seaforth may havd an answer for you. It's a new furnace that can burn either a liquid fuel like oil or a solid fuel and use it to heat a boiler which then produces steam for the heating system. The company has put out such a system for forced air in the past. The system switched automatically from a solid fuel such as wood or coal to a liquid fuel when the solid fuel runs out so that there is no interruption in heat. It's been bought for everything from houses to industries to chicken barns and the company is looking for a way of cubing chicken manure and wood shavings used to bed chicken houses so that these too can be used as fuel. A weekend away from her third -year studies at University of Western Ontario proved a profitable one for Lynne Hill the pretty Teeswater girl on Sept. 17. when she won the crown of Miss Mid -Western Ontario at the annual competition at the Lucknow Fall Fair. Miss Hill was one of Ib girls from all over the region trying for the title. She was crowned by Miss Dominion of Canada Marianne McKeen. Miss Hill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Hill of Teeswater is now eligible to enter the Miss Dominion of Canada pageant next year. For more years than many people can remember Art Carr and his wife Freda were as much a part of Palmerston as the railway. The crusty but loveable newspap- er publisher turned 65 recently and decided it was time to retire. He sold his business to Laverne and Joan Long and took an extended vacation travelling to western Canada. On that trip he won the gold quill award, one of the rarest awards given by the Canadian Community Newspaper Association for 50 years service in the newspaper business. When he returned he and Freda were guests of honour at a dinner given by the new owners on September 17. Sixty-five he may be but Art Carr looks far from ready to quiet down and with all that sparetime on his hands. Palmerston had better be ready for some strange developments from a man who has always been as much inventor as he has been publisher. ❑ Aug RN ?Hor/E S36-Jb OPitJ DAILY itoo r 6::3oP41 OTHER TIMES 3y CNAIDCE oR fj PPOs NT NIE NT MAN y HRWIOeRAFTED ITEMS VISIT' VS SOOIJ OPP.
