Village Squire, 1977-08, Page 29ART Art In The Park provides a lot of free entertainment BY G.P. Nearly a decade ago a handful of artists and potters summoned up the courage to squat under the trees to the east of the Festival Theatre and display their wares. As their numbers increased complaints were made about them encroaching on the picnic area and there followed the threat of expulsion. Fortunately for all festival goers as well as art oriented towns people a compromise arrangement was made. The group moved down by the swan pond to the west of the parking lot where they are still exhibiting on Wednesdays. Saturdays and Sundays through July and August. The group now levy a self-imposed fee which goes to park rental. advertising and has annually lead to a small but useful annual surplus which is donated to chosen art program in Stratford itself. There are now more than 70 members working in a variety of mediums. The writer, a regular theatre goer, and enthusiastic art lover has kept a close watch over the exhibitors over the years and would like to offer the following comments (admittedly subjective) for the benefit of Village Squire readers who may not yet have enjoyed the pleasure of a really rewarding stroll among the exhibitors on a sunny afternoon. Give yourself plenty of time for you will find a couple of hours little enough to have a careful look at all the group has to offer.
