Village Squire, 1977-08, Page 28store. The Robin Company building at the
present village was transported from
Caraquet. It was built about 1855.
James Blackhall's importance in the
Caraquet area was more political than
commercial. The well-to-do Scotsman,
whose comparatively luxurious house was
built between 1822 and 1840, was
postmaster, justice of the peace, school
trustee and customs officer. The design of
his house was influenced by Scottish
architecture and it is by far the most
comfortable home in the settlement.
The other houses are strictly pioneer
homes, solid and functional, containing
only bare essentials. The oldest, built in
1783, belonged to farmer Jean-Baltazar
Martin. It is the only one with an earthern
floor. The other homes also bear the names
of their builders, names that are prominent
in many parts of New Brunswick today.
They were built by Pierre Mazerolle
(Fredericton area), Edouard Godin (Mai-
sonnette), Pierrot Robichaud (Inkerman),
Romain Doucet (Ste -Anne -de -Bathurst),
Laurent Cyr (St -Basile -de -Madawaska),
Charles Godin (Upper Caraquet), Louis
Poirier (Caraquet), Gabriel Leger (Mem-
ramcook), Jean Babineau (Bedec) and Vital
Savoie (Neguac). The newest house was
built by Charles Godin in 1889. It contained
a store and, for a time, a post office.
Louis Poirier's home was also a pub
where liquor was sold for consumption on
the spot or to take out. In those days, wine
and rum were the popular drinks.
The little school was moved from
Chockpish, near Richibucto in Kent
County. When it opened in 1879, it had 32
students around the pot-bellied stove. The
white chapel is a replica made from
photographs of one at Sainte -Anne -du -Bo -
cage built between 1831 and 1836.
All the furniture in the various homes is
authentic and was hand -made by Acad-
ians. It was collected here and there in the
province and repaired, when necessary, to
its original state.
Most of the old homes on display come
from Gloucester County, in the immediated
area of Caraquet, itself a popular
attraction. At one time, Caraquet had the
longest main street (seven miles or 11
kilometres) of any village in Canada. It lost
this distinction when it became a town, but
it retained its original charm which is that
of an important fishing community.
There is good accommodation in the town
and Hotel Paulin serves excellent food in
its licensed dining room.
The Acadian Museum at Caraquet is
filled with relics and artifacts pertaining to
the history of the east coast of New
Brunswick and the fish market on the
wharf attracts tourists and local residents.
Fishermen from all over the province
attend the School of Fisheries at Caraquet
which boasts the largest fishing fleet in the
province.
For sports enthusiasts, a visit to the
Village historique acadien can be combined
with a day of fishing for the giant bluefin
tuna, sometimes weighing over 1,000
pounds (450 kilograms). Caraquet is 152
miles (253 kilometres) from Moncton which
is served by both Air Canada and Eastern
Provincial Airways. It is 125 highway miles
(253 kilometres) from Matapedia, on the
