area. White clay underlies this whole area
of South Easthop. The original settlers on
50 -acre plots in the area were from Hesse,
Bavaria and Prussia, Rhineland.
There's a line of power lines here to use
as a landmark and about a mile after
passing it, comes sideline 35 on which you
should turn left (north). The road takes
you to highway 7-8 east of Stratford which
you should cross and head into North
Easthope township. It isn't far (one mile)
before you cross the Avon, though you may
find it hard to believe that this little trickle
of water is the same river that is so
impressive a few miles away in downtown
Stratford. Another third of a mile and
you'll come to concession 2-3 of North
Easthope township. Turn right on the
paved road. Just a half mile from the
corner you'll come to Brocksden farm and
Brocksden Museum. This was formerly
Brocksden School and has been restored to
its original clapboard over the brick
construction. The beautiful grounds may
be used for picnics and reunions and other
events and the museum is open on
Saturdays, mostly on Sundays and holidays
when there is an attendant.
The road proceeds through pleasant,
rolling land with many field stone houses.
It's another three and a half miles down the
road to Bell's school and St. Andrew's
church and cemetery, clustered on a
corner. Then it's up the hill and on for
another mile to sideline 15 where you turn
right. Just off the sideroad a piece is the
source of the Avon where it "sparkles from
the fern", says Mrs. Cooke. Edged with
watercress and blue tlags it threads its way
between pastures, cornfields, high -bush
cranberries, cedars and willows towards
Stratford, then on to Avonbank and
Avonton and finally flows into the Thames.
It's only a little over a mile back to
highway 7-8 on sideline 15. You can make
a choice at the corner. You can go up to
Fryfogle's Inn, about a quarter mile to the
left (east), if you wish and see one of the
only inns left from the original Huron road
built by Van Egmond and others for the
Canada company when the Huron Tract
was first being opened up more than a
century ago. If not, keep going on sideline
15, across Highway 7-8 and back into South
Easthope township.
At the first corner, about a mile south of
the highway, turn left for a short jog and
you can see the pretty stone church called
St. Anthony's. It was built in 1863 and is
preserved in beautiful condition by the
decendents of the original German and
Irish, Scottish and English settlers. There
is also an old cemetery. Mass is said at
least once a year in the tiny church.
Turning back on the concession 2-3 on
which we came down to the church, we
departed from Mrs. Cooke's route and
went up Highway 59 to Shakespeare. The
little village has many intersting shops
which can provide interesting shopping for
those who like to browse.
Then it was back on Highway 7-8 (left)
and back into Stratford.
Our thanks to Mrs. Cooke. We invite
others to submit suggestions of routes to
be followed for intersting trips.
All men are
not created equally
That's why we don't have a lot of sameness
in our store.
You'll find colors, patterns and styles that
will suit almost all men we might have to deal
with in our store.
Whether it be slacks, shorts, swim suits,
ties or shirts, we realize all men are not
created with equal (or same) taste.
