very poring attempts of English socialites to entertain wounded soldiers. Jack McLaren's sketch will
be part of the show at Charlottetown Festival.
talent and he in turn set McLaren to work on the Princess
Pat's Comedy Company.
This team was separate from the original Dumbell troupe.
The Dumbells were a regimental show for the whole Third
Division but Mr. McLaren's group was a battalion show and
though they were urged to join the larger group, they stayed
out of loyalty to Hamilton Galt, the man who had founded the
Pat's with a huge donation when war broke out.
Mr. McLaren recalls the first show they put on for the
troops. They had been rehearsing for shows during the third
battle of Ypres when the Germans blew right through the
Princess Pat's and reinforcements were rushed in. It was to a
group of these reinforcements that the Princess Pat's Comedy
Company first performed. The men were angry at being
forced to go to the show rather than being able to persue their
own pleasures and so it wasn't exactly an ideal audience for a
