36. VILLAGE SQUIRE/MAY 1977.
winds through Colborne township and
youll soon come into one of the prettiest
villages in Ontario: Benmiller.
Benmiller has seen so many changes in
the past few years since London millionaire
developer Peter Ivey bought the old woolen
mill and grist mill beside the Maitland. The
whole face of the village has changed so
much. The woolen mill is now an exclusive
country inn called The Mill. one of the
favourite dining spots in Western Ontario.
Downstream. if you want to detour for a
moment, you can see the old grist mill
which hardly looks like a mill at all in its
new incarnation as The River Inn, part of
the Ivey development.
Also at Benmiller is the Fall Reserve
Park. run by the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority. a park that has
been a very popular camping and picnic
ground.
Returning to county road 31 you can
head back out of the village. About two
miles out of Benmiller the county road
makes a sharp turn to the right. but go
straight ahead until you come to a sharp
left hand turn another mile or so down the
road. All the other roads are dead end
roads at this turn so you have only one
choice.
The road soon turns sharply to the right
between two little iakes in the middle of a
forested area. The water comes within feet
of the road here. On you go through scenic
narrow roads until you read Ball's bridge
where it crosses the Maitland: Ball's
bridge is one of those elderly iron bridges
that are becoming more and more scarce.
