After 70 years in the Ministry, Rev. Ure
Stewart of Seaforth can say "I have hope
for the church." Looking/at the many
changes in the church over the many years
since he was ordained on April 30, 1907 the
Saltford native is cheered by the
ecumenical movement which sees greater
understanding between the various relig-
ions. The popular minister was honoured
on the anniversary of his entering the
ministry by his now home church of
Northside United in Seaforth. He retired
from the active ministry in 1951.
Sometimes teachers can get exasperated
with the textbooks they have to teach from
but Stratford Central' s • vice-principal John
Miller has two texts he shouldn't be upset
ith: he co-authored them. The books,
Gaining Power and Exercising Power, deal
with the political system in Canada. Miller
and his co-author Donald Hurst were
history teachers in the same school in
Hamilton when the idea for the books came
up. They felt there was a need to show the
"problems and the human aspects of
politics." So far 20,000 copies of the books
have been printed and will most likely be
used by students in the grade 8 to 10 area.
Students from Newfoundland to British
Columbia and perhaps even Stratford may
use the books.
The reaction from students is encourag-
ing." Miller says. "They say the books are

fun to read. I think they are fairly genuine
in their responses."
Some people speak about being worn out
by hard work but not Annie Phillips of
Stratford. And Mrs. Phillips should know.
She celebrated her 101st birthday in
Stratford on April 29 with a party which
included such guests as Mayor Keith
Culliton.
"She was always doing something,
whether it was helping neighbours or doing
the chores around home or lighting the
stove early in the morning," he son Bill
said. She's possessed with a memory that
is as good, if not better than, ever, and
says her son, has never been sick, although
she no longer has complete use of her legs.

While some people put money where
their mouth is, Adrian Keet of the
Wingham area put his feet where his
convictions were last month. Mr. Keet,
who is a strong supporter of the Right to
Life movement decided to let his feet do
the talking as he set off on foot for Ottawa
to join the Festival of Life on May 5-7. In
the age of conservation that's really saving
nonrenewable resources....that is if feet
are renewable.
