gets another
feather for its cap
The Faculty of Music at the University of
Western Ontario will be greatly strength-
ened next September when it gets a new
addition in the form of Quartet Canada, a
chamber group of international stature.
Two years ago four of Canada's most
distinguished soloist, Ronald Turini,1
pianist, Steven Staryk, violinist, Gerald
Stanick, voilist, and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi,
cellist, fused their individual tempera-
ments and talents into an ensemble that
won immediate acclaim.
Turini, a protege of the renowned
Wladmir Horowitz, is living in Montreal.
Staryk, who is now living in Toronto,
returned to Canada in 1972 after a brilliant
career in Europe where Sir Thomas
Beechman core him as the youngest -ever
concertmaster of the Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra. Winnipeg -born Gerald Stanick
was a member of the famous U.S. Fine
Arts Quartet and presently teaches at the
University of Victoria. Tsuyoshi Tsutisumi
studied with Janos Starker at Indiana
University and has been at Western for the
last ten years.
Quartet Canada will be in residence at
Western and the members will divide their
lime between teaching at Western and
performing in Canada and abroad.
Dean Hugh J. McLean considers that
their residency will add great strength to
Western's Faculty of Music, already the
largest in Canada, especially to its string
program. "The world-wide shortage of
good string players is a concern and
challenge for every music educator," he
said.
