each of our beds and enough yarn to knit socks and mitts for
us all. Some years we went to Goderich before coming home
and ate our lunch in the park by the harbour. There was
always a chance for a high swing over the steep bank and a
good look at a big ship unloading grain in the harbour. The
magnificent Lake Huron seemed to go out forever to the end
of space. On such occasion, if we shopped, my Grandmother
usually purchased the material for a new dress for me.
Summertime brought many rides with my grandparents in
the model T Ford, as I accompanied them on visits and
shopping trips. Delicious picnic suppers that our family
shared together under the chestnut trees were also part of my
wonderful summer memories. After chores and the milking
were finished, we often sat outside together until late bedtime
and a cool breeze came through the orchard. 1 remember
sitting in the twilight on a footstool by Grandmother's skirt. I
asked her to light the lamp as it was getting dark and I felt
lonesome. Grandmother told me that twilight was the
loveliest time of the day. It was a magical time. She told me
that these were her twilight years, the best time in all her life
-- the carefree years when it is possible for grandparents and
grandchildren to feel very close bonds and share special
secrets that no one else knows.
Coming home from school when I got older, I first stopped
at my Grandparents house with the mail and to share my
day's fun and show them what I'd learned at school. One
morning, while loitering on my way to school, I realized I was
going to be late. It was a disgrace to walk in late when
everyone was working, I thought. As 1 visualized this scene I
quickly turned around and ran home. Grandmother was busy
