The Gallery/Stratford until April 3: A
Decade is a ten year retrospective which
highlights the emergence of a young
exciting talent. The fifty-four (54) works
that were selected from the hundreds of
pieces created by Walter Bachinski
throughout the past ten years show clearly
the artist's challenging explorations and
technical ability in a variety of themes in all
of his media whether prints, drawings,
reliefs or full sculptures. Ranging from
tenderness in a relief portrait of his
daughter "Sarah" through the lyrical
studies of a series of "Artist and Model"
drawings and into the terrifying and
compassionate subjects of the "Furies"
and "Revelations", Bachinski takes the
viewer through a complete range of
sensations. To quote Paul Duval the author
of the catalogue text "it is this wide and
expertly controlled variety of techniques
which helps to single out Bachinski from
most of his Canadian contempories. No
less notable is his thematic range, an
unusually broad one, stretching from the
tenderness of Motherhood to the horrend-
ous tragedy of Saturn devouring his young.
Probably, it is this readiness to tackle the
universality of emotions which, perhaps
more than anything else, foretells the
emergence of Walter Bachinski as one of
our most challenging and eventually
satisfying artists."
Bachinski: A decade was organized by
the Kitchener -Waterloo Art Gallery.
