Village Squire, 1977-03, Page 14what happened to Peter."
"Oh, he disappeared. Some people say he must have gone
abroad. The old man was right though, he did return. They
found his body hanging from a beam in the room where Jake
had been attacked. He left a note confessing the crime.
Conscience is a stange thing and Jake had been' the only father
he had known. Folks around here say he still returns on the
anniversary of the old man's death."
Before I could say anthing more, he was gone, vanished into
the darkness. I stood for a moment staring after him then,
shivering, I walked quickly back to the Inn.
The owner was alone behind the bar as I went through.
"Good evening. Miss," he called. "I was beginning to
wonder if you had lost your way. It's easy enough to do in a
strange place."
I laughed, assuring him that I had been quite alright. But I
still felt distrubed. It has suddenly struck me that my late
companion had known a lot of facts about the story that would,
surely, only have been known to Pete and old Jake.
Determined to get to the bottom of the story, I said to my
host, "I met a man on the cliff walk. He came to the edge of
the village with me and was telling me a story about a murder
in the house on the edge of the cliff. Old Jake Timmis, he said
the name of the victim was."
1 gave the outline of the story as it had been told to me:
confessing my curiosity at the man's knowledge of so many of
the facts.
My host nodded, "Thirty years ago too, just about this
time of year. Sad affair it was."
He stared reflectively at the glass in his hand. Looking up.
went on, "I know who your story teller was!"
My heart skipped a beat as I waited for the disclosure. A
feeling that I already knew what he was going to say, came
over me.
"That was Pete," the man behind the bar was saying.
"Peter Timmis?" 1 whispered, my voice barely audible.
"Bless my soul, of course not. That was Pete Baldwin. He
earns his living writing stories. The yarn he told you is one of
his favourites; based on truth too. He tells it to just about
every visitor he meets up here. Likes to add a bit of interest to
their stay!"
