Village Squire, 1977-03, Page 13"Pete went alright, but not that night. A storm had been threatening all the day of the big row and by nightfall it was a full blown gale. Anyway, Pete was compelled to stay until it: died away. It was morning before the winds showed any signs of abating. All through the night he stayed in his room; his mind filled with hatred for his uncle." Silence followed, as we negotiated a difficult section of the path. We reached the sandy beach, a short distance from the edge of the water and we turned to where the land levelled off and habitation began. Soon I was glad to see the lights of the village come into view, but was curious to know the outcome of the story; my fear of the stranger calming a little. "What happened then? 1 prompted. "Well, Pete decided that before he went there was something he had to do. Somewhere in the house his uncle had quite a Targe sum of money and that mohey was going with him. With brute strength he forced his uncle to show him where the money was hidden. Old Jake must have put up quite a fight to save his wealth, but evidently failed. Later the same day the police came to warn Jake that the storms were making serious inroads into the cliff face and that, for his own sake, he should leave the house. They found the old man battered and unconscious. A spark of life was still there and they rushed him to the hospital. Detectives sat for days at his bedside, hoping that he might be able tc tell them details of the attack, but before he died all he could whisper was, "He'll Come back; he always comes home." Here I interrupted, "Surely it was obvious who had killed the poor chap." "Yes, 1 suppose it was, Pete was well known as a type who would do anything to get his hands on money; and no money was found in the house. That, and the old man's last words, made a pretty good case against Pete." We were at the edge of the village now and my informant stopped, "Well, my dear, this is where I leave you." "Wait a minute," 1 begged.
