Village Squire, 1977-02, Page 29wide range of materials and approaches
during his career. However, an exhibition
of Arthur Handy's sculpture , continuing
until Feb. 27 at the London Art Gallery
shows that in exceptional cases this is
possible.
The exhibition of 30 works spans this
sculptor's career from 1963 to 1976 and
includes early ceramic pieces, drawings,
and more recent large works in fibreglas,
wood, steel and foam.
This 43 year old artist began his career
as a ceramicist while studying at the New
York State College of Ceramics, Alfred
University, New York, graduating with an
MFA in 1960. A move to Toronto initiated a
series of annual or bi-annual, one-man
shows at the Isaacs Gallery, Toronto and
inclusion in exhibitions in virtually every
public art gallery in Ontario and across
Canada. During the early 60's, he was
considered the pioneer and master of
ceramic sculpture in Canada.
The year 1965 was a turning point in
Arthur Handy's art, as he moved from
ceramic pieces into large fabricated
sculpture of fibreglas. At this time he was
dubbed by art critic, Harry Malcomson, as
"the most daring artist on the Toronto art
scene". The years between 067 and the
present involved further experimentation
with large sculpture and the production of
two very major works - Aphrodite Yawns in
fibreglas (now in the collection National
Gallery of Canada. Ottawa) and a
commissioned outdoor sculpture for the
Department of External Affairs in Ottawa
of fabricated steel. The one-man shows
continued at the Isaacs Gallery with wood
pieces in 1972 and 1974.
Included in the exhibit is Handy's\most
recent work, Steel and Foam, an
exploration into densities in hard and soft
materials.
LONDON/SASKATOON EXCHANGE:
London/Saskatoon Exchange running
until February 27 at the London Art Gallery
allows visitors an opportunity to see the
work of artists from the western city of
saskatoon in London.
The idea for the exhibition grew from
discussions between Mrs. Paddy O'Brien,
Curator of the London Art Gallery and Mr.
John Climer, Director of the Saskatoon
Gallery and Conservatory Corporation (The
Mendel Art Gallery). As part of the
exchange, the work of London artists will
be shown in Saskatoon late in 1977.
The exhibition contains the work of 16
artists chosen by Don DeGrow, Assistant
Curator of the London Art Gallery, who
visited over 40 studios iri November of
1976. Most of the artists chosen have not
exhibited before outside of Saskatchewan.
The works in the exhibition run the
entire gamut of current art media. The tone
of the exhibition is refreshingly vivacious.
Many of the pieces have an intrinsic
humour especially those termed ceramic
"funk". Painting printmaking, soft sculp-
ture, fibre sculpture and multi -media are
also represented.
