ART
PATERSON EWEN RETROSPECTIVE:
London Art Gallery, Nov. 6 • 30.
The London Art Gallery has assembled a
Retrospective exhibition of Paterson
Ewen's paintings from 1947 to the present.
The exhibition will be on view at the
Gallery, November 6 to 30, with a reception
to meet the artist. Friday, November 5 at
8:30 p.m. Paterson Ewen originally from
Montreal, moved to London in 1968 and is
currently in the Department of Visual Arts,
University of Western Ontario.
Mr. Ewen's recent works - gouged
plywood panels on which he has worked
with paint. magic marker and metal - have
received national critical acclaim, however
little is known in Ontario about his earlier
work. The London Art Gallery felt that it.
was important to show a body of Ewen's
work, spanning his career, in order to see
the development toward his current
painting.
Pat Ewen's career began in the 1940's in
Montreal where he studied with' artist,
Goodridge Roberts from 1948 to 1950. His
early figurative paintings at this time were
rooted in the tradition of post -impressionist
and early modern figurative art. During the
1950's, he associated with Paul Emile
Borduas and "Les Automatistes" and was
stimulated by the Abstract Expressionist
works he saw in New York. He began to
experiment more aggressively with the
manipulation of form and colour, and soon
found that the figurative element was
unnecessary for his painting. In the 1960's
Pat Ewen worked in series format each
being very different from the other
ecompassing geometric, hard -edged and
minimal modes of expression.
The 48 works in the exhibition reflect the
changes in style, influences upon, and
experimentation in Paterson Ewen's
paintings.
In the catalogue for the Paterson Ewen
Retrospective, Dr. Robert McKaskell
writes, in summary:
"Paterson Ewen, painting for himself
and for painting, following his own course,
always youthful in his thinking, changing
like twenieth-century man, producing
works and whose roughness places them in
