Village Squire, 1976-11, Page 7outlet perhaps an antique store or something else which will
fit in well with the style of building they want to have.
One of the big jobs will be having the bricks acid -treated to
remove the old paint. They had earlier planned to sandblast
the paint but were warned by Heritage officials that
sandblasting would damage the brick and that the acid
treatment would be better. With that done, and the belfry
rebuilt, the real beauty of the building will again be visible,
they say, and the artist's conceptions of the building they
have done show this. Once people can really see what it's
going to look like, they feel, the support that is already
growing :ill become even stronger.
So 1977 looks like a big year in the life of the Exeter Town
Hall. Ironically, it will be the building's 90th birthday.
Without a lot of stubborn work on the part of a band of
volunteers it might be nothing but a pile of 90 -year-old bricks.
