right and doesn't try to shuffle to the trough after he's managed
to get up on her. Not unlike human beings, I guess, who like a
little interest in the issue.
Boars can pick out the sows in heat by smell. They sniff their
vulva. If she's in heat and he's up to the job, it's an 'instant on'.
If he's not up to it, he gets a smaller ration, to make him
hungrier, and if that doesn't work, he may have an appointment
at the meat packers next week. Problems in breeding arise when
an immature boar tries to breecj an older sow'who is therefore
bigger. He can't quite make it up there. I don't go in to help.
Sally Ann, the sow, should get about three services during her
heat to ensure success. It doesn't have to be the same boar. If she
isn't bred, she comes around again in three weeks. If she fails to
get bred after more than two or three tries, she also makes a trip
to the meat packers.
A fertile sow should produce and raise to eight weeks two and a
sail)/ ^nil , pigs are healthy, of unitorm size, and being the
midwife; l put tip a heat lamp for them and lifted one struggling
newborn out of the mucus with the toe of my none too sterile
boot. In about twenty minutes. • they are dry and pink and
staggering about the pen.
No matter how careful the midwifery, about twenty percent of
the total litters born are lost. Some are born dead. Some are lost
