Village Squire, 1976-09, Page 14mere fraction of what it would have taken to have professionals do the work. By painting the ceiling baffles black and the sidewall baffles in various bright colours, the egg cartons actually add rather than detract from the appearance. The early years saw the hall as host to visiting shows like the Chautauqua. It was the scene of lively political meetings and old timers can recall when it could be full of people for the annual nomination meeting for town council. The public and high schools both used the hall for their presentations until new buildings for each saw them acquire their own facilities. There were minstrel shows sponsored by the local Lions Club and Kinsmen club. There were high school theatrical , productions. For many such halls, the coming of television spelled doom. For Wingham, though, it didn't and perhaps it even helped use of the hall. Wingham has always had a strong amateur theatre tradition. There have been ups and downs, but there have been few years go by that there hasn't been at least one amateur theatre production. The presence of the talented performers and technicians of the CKNX television station gave Wingham theatre circles a talent pool that most communities could only dream about. When the old hands got tired there was always some new blood to .come along and pick things up. The local theatre even performed an original play, Varying Shades of Grey, by Rick Wellwood who worked for CKNX at the time and now is with CFPL in London. There's no feeling of sadness in this old hall. There are echoes perhaps of old glories but there are no ghosts. There's a feeling of the future as much as one of the past. After the depressing state of so many of the area's old buildings, it's indeed a relief.
