A tiny balcony runs across the rear of the old auditorium of the Lucknow town hall, once the centre
of entertainment in the village but now seldom used.
hall had I'll never know. Anyway, I remember
two annual concerts before someone in their
wisdom, perhaps thinking of the sanity of the
teachers, decided that Christmas concerts
were no longer needed.
A few years later, still in the 1950's when
the use of the community halls was dying out,
there was a great deal of excitement in the
village especially on the school- grounds. A
hypnotist was touring the area and would be
performing at the hall. To publicize the event,
he put a volunteer, a local youngman, to sleep
in a store window and he slept throughout the
day while people marvelled at it all and made
sure they bought their tickets for the shows.
We crowded into the hall and watched as
the hypnotist putpeople into a trance and
took them_ out of it again with a snap of'his
fingers. It was special fun for we
youngsters in public school because we got to
see the teenage boys, the ones who used to
bully us in the school yards and on the
busride to and from home, made to do all
sorts of silly things like acting like a chicken..
The old seats in the balcony go empty now.
